Project Monitoring Week 4

This week I have just been continuing progress on my DPS'. I finished my Youtube DPS at the beginning of the second lesson and I am very happy with how it came out. The article itself doesn't include as much information as I would have perhaps liked, but it still offers some good advice. I am very happy with the overall design and layout on this DPS, a lot happier than I am with my first one. I do not think I will go back to this one at the end because there is not as much that needs improving.

Once I had completed this I began progress on my 3rd and final DPS. In all honesty for the last couple of lessons I have been procrastinating and not really doing anything particularly productive. This is because what I really need to do is write my final article, but I have no motivation to do it because I am not as passionate about it as the other two articles, it is also much harder work than the other two articles because it requires me to do some research and surveys. This procrastination has caused me to become a little behind. However I have made a little bit of progress with the design of the DPS which I think looks strong so far.

Over half term I intend to get my third article finished and perhaps also download InDesign so that I can continue progress at home. I also intend to get this blog fully up to date and even though it doesn't say on my schedule I might begin work on my front cover because I already have access to photoshop at home.

Project Monitoring Week 3

By this point I was working completely differently to what I had planned in my schedule, this week I planned to begin and finish sub-editing my first DPS get feedback on it, then wirte my first draft for my second article. But what I actually did was almost finish my second DPS, do my photoshoot and write the second and final draft of article 2.

The first lesson, was spent continuing  working on my Youtube DPS, I also spent a lot of time on it outside of class, which meant I made good progress and almost completed it by the end of the week. I am happy with how it looks so far, however I think that I still need to work on improving the break-out box, not only in terms of design, but also content, so that I can add something with a little more substance. I play to move the breakout box to the bottom of the page and try and make it look like a ripped page. This is something I will develop over the weekend. I also think that I should add a little more page furniture just to spice up the page a little; things like lines in between the columns.

My second lesson of the week was spent doing the photoshoots. When it came to actually doing the shoot I didn't refer back to my photoshoot plans at all, and I just used the lighting that was already set up. I don't really have a reason for this other than laziness, so hopefully this didn't have too much of a negative affect on my photos. By the end of the session my goal was to have two photos, one for the front cover of Joe looking nervously to the left, and one of Joe jumping, for my youtube DPS. This is the image I have decided i'm going to use on my front cover:

I think that the actual image it'self is well lighted, and in focus, however the only issue that I didn't notice, until my assessor pointed it out is that he is not making direct eye contact with the camera, which is something that almost every magazine out there does. Once I decided this would be the image I will use, I enhanced it slightly in Photoshop, this was the end result:

I first of all used the Lasso tool in Photoshop to remove Joe from the background. I then used the Liquify tool to decrease the size of his jaw and make him look slightly thinner overall, then using the Clone and Healing tools, I removed all of the spots on his face, and finally I altered the Brightness, Contrast, Hue and Saturations tools to make him look more tanned. I think that this all worked very well. I had never altered the saturation of an image before so this is a new technique I learnt.

I had to take several photos of Joe jumping in the air before I got 1 I wanted, because it was very difficult to time. The studio itself wasn't right for the photoshoot because when he jumped into the air his head escaped the boundries of the backdrop, meaning that when I came to cut him out in photoshop it was more difficult.

This is the image I decided I would use:
Here are some other attempts where my timing wasn't right:

Inbetween the second and third lesson I created the explosion graphic using an explosion I got from the internet and the image from my photoshoot. This is what I came up with:

This was created in photoshop, used the lasso tool to remove the background, and added a subtle outer glow so that it looked like there was a light source behind him. I then placed the explosion behind him and added an overlay to Joe so that he was slightly transparent.

In my third lesson I wrote a second and final version of my second article, so that I would have all the componants required to complete this DPS. This is what I came up with:

Article 2 Second Draft

One hour of video is uploaded to Youtube every second, that makes getting noticed very difficult. Today we’re gonna be discussing some top tips that will help you get to the top of that Youtube food chain!

Whether you want to be a film maker, vlogger, musician or gamer the basic rules and guides are all the same.  Any youtuber will tell you that the guide to success is consistency, if you want to be a vlogger or film maker you should really upload at least once a week, two weeks max. Gamers on the other hand are expected to upload at least 4 times a week if you want to keep up with competition. If you don’t upload regularly then your existing subscribers will forget about you and become inactive. Less people will watch you if there is less to watch.

However it is important not to choose quantity over quality, it is pointless uploading everyday if there is no real substance behind any of your videos.  There is a whole process behind producing content; coming up with an idea, planning it, recording, editing and marketing. If you put effort into editing your videos (doing things like cutting out boring bits, adding background music), it will make your videos appear a lot more professional, and people are more likely to subscribe.

You might have noticed the word marketing, and thought to yourself “I can’t afford to advertise my videos?!” well doing little things like adding customised thumbnails (the image that appears before you click the video), and using good grammar (capital letters, no spelling mistakes) can make a big different to the amount of traffic you generate.

Once you have managed to gather yourself 100 or so regular viewers it is important to interact with them as much as possible so you can build a relationship with the people who allow to do this. Ask them for advice on what to do next and how to improve, making videos that your viewers actually want to watch is a key to success.

Speaking from experience the best way to succeed on youtube is to practise. Just keep on making content. The saying practise makes perfect is definitely true because the more videos you make the better you will get at all the things I have already mentioned, you will learn more about how youtube works, what kind of videos do well and which videos don’t. Eventually, if you’re prepared to put the effort in and work hard, you will succeed and you will, get big on youtube.

In this current lesson I am continuing to work on my DPS. Now that I have added my article and image of Joe, the DPS is near enough complete, I just have to improve the things I mentioned earlier. This is my DPS in it's current state, I shall continue to work on this over the weekend and hopefully be ready to start my third DPS early next week:

I think that my client would actually be happy with my progress this week, because I have gotten a lot done and my product looks quite good. I am a little worried about my progress this week because I don't think I will have enough time left to make improvements.

Project Monitoring Week 2

In my schedule for week 1 I wrote that my first session would be consumed by writing a second draft of my second article, however because I did that last week I instead decided to instead keep working on my first DPS. I also said in my schedule that I would plan all of my photoshoots the lesson before I actually had the photoshoot, here is a printscreen of one of the plans, you can see it in more detail on my blog:

The final task I set out to complete this week was my actual photoshoot. I was successful in meeting my photoshoot planning aim because I did them, however perhaps I didn't give as much detail as I could of done. The photoshoot aim itself was a disaster, because when I went to book my shoot the studio was fully booked for the whole week. I did not write about this in my contingency plan meaning I didn't have a backup plan, this will make me a little behind my scedule. I was able to book a photoshoot but it isn't till next Wednesday, I should have planned for this.

I did however complete my first DPS, I don't think that it is 100% perfect but because time is moving on and I still have a lot to do, I am going to begin working on my second DPS, then, if I have time, I can go back and improve this one at the end. This is my DPS so far:

I really like the colour scheme on this page as not only does it look good, it is also suitable for my audience and genre. I also think the font choices work very well but I dislike how crowded the page looks in it's current state, perhaps I made the font size a little too big, and if I re-sized it it would allow a lot more space. I particularly dislike how point 5 is in both the white and blue half, and how the final point overlays the main image. These effects were achieved by using the text wrap function in InDesign.

When my assessor looked at my magazine he said he didn't understand why the numbers descend rather than ascend and on reflection I don't really understand  why I did this either, this is another thing I will go back and change if I get a chance.

My first DPS was finished during the second lesson this week. Because I was unable to do my photoshoots like I intended to, I decided that I would start my first draft of my second article, this took the entire lesson, plus working on it alot outside of the lesson. This is what I came up with:

Article 2 First Draft

How To Get Big On YouTube

One hour of video is uploaded to Youtube every second, that makes getting noticed very difficult, especially when there are so many people out there with already established channels. Today we’re gonna be discussing some top tips from top youtubers on how to succeed on this amazing website.

There are several different types of youtubers out there, the most popular ones are probably film makers, vloggers and gamers. What you want to be is your decision,  but the basic rules and guides are all the same.  Any youtuber will tell you that the guide to success is consistency, if you want to be a vlogger or film maker you should really upload at least once a week, two weeks max. Gamers on the other hand are expected to upload at least 4 times a week if you want to keep up with competition. If you don’t upload regularly then your existing subscribers will forget about you and become inactive and less people are going to watch you if there are less videos to watch.

You might have noticed the work marketing, and thought to yourself “I can’t afford to advertise my videos?!”, well doing little things like adding customized thumbnails (the image that appears before you click the video), adding appropriate capitalization  to your titles and making sure there are no spelling mistakes can make a big difference to the amount of views your videos get.

Once you have managed to gather yourself 100 or so regular viewers it is important to interact with them as much as possible so you can build a relationship with the people who allow to do this. Ask them for advice on what to do next and how to improve, so you you’re actually making videos that your viewers want to watch.

Speaking from experience the best way to succeed on youtube is to practice. Just keep on making content. The saying practise makes perfect is definitely true because the more videos you make the better you will get at all the things I have already mentioned, you will learn more about how youtube works, what kind of videos do well and which videos don’t. Eventually, if you’re prepared to put the effort in and work hard, you will succeed and you will get big on youtube.

In the final lesson of the week that I am writing this blog entry in, I began to design my second DPS, I have not done much yet. But as you can see I used the same font for my mast head, as I did on my other page, to create a magazine house style. This time I decided to use a red and black color scheme, which are two very strong powerful colors that compliment and contrast each other well. However I think that I will perhaps change the red slightly to a more bold version. I went for a slighter red to match the Youtube logo, but on reflection I think this was a mistake. This is my DPS so far:

I haven't really learnt any new editing techniques this week, but I have learnt how important it is to have back-up plans and contingency's in place for when things go wrong. I have also learnt how important it is to be organised well in advance, if I had booked my photoshoot last week rather than at the beginning of this week, I'd probably be doing it right now. I think that my client would be disappointed with my progress this week because it is the end of week 2 and I am yet to produce a fully completed DPS yet, I also think they would be worried about how unorganized I was in terms of my photoshoot. Both DPS' that I am working on do match what I set out to do in my treatment, however obviously not all objectives have been met yet. I am slightly worried about my overall progress, however if I try to do as much work outside of lessons as I can, and prioritize this over my other subjects, I should be able to meet the deadline.

Project Monitoring Week 1

I have now finished the first week of my project. In my schedule I set myself 3 simple homework tasks in order to gently ease myself into my project. They were to r

This week I did my font research before lesson 1 which saved me a little time because I was able to do the header straight away. They were to research fonts for my Money article, decide which font I am going to use, then decide which blending options I am going to apply to it.

I used the website Dafont to select my fonts, I very quickly chose a basic style I liked which was a san serif narrow font. And then simply picked out my favorite 7. This was the short list:

After asking 3 different people who all fit my target audience which font they liked the most I decided to go with Bebas Neue, because 2 out of 3 people liked that one the most, and so did I. I also decided not to add any Blending options, because I think the thing I like about this font is it's simplicity, and I didn't want to over complicate that.

I finished the font tasks before starting the first lesson which mean't I had the opportunity to get ahead of my schedule and begin my week 2 work. In reflection I definitely didn't delegate enough tasks for myself in week 1.

I decided that I would begin writing my second draft of my Money article, when I opened my first draft that I had wrote several weeks previously and read back over it i realized that I didn't actually have as much to change as I originally thought, meaning my second draft was finished in my first lesson, this is my second draft:

Article 1 Draft 2

We all want more money. But these days getting a part time job is hard, and lets face it, who wants to work in Tescos anyway? Today we’re gonna learn 7 unusual but surprisingly efficient ways to earn some extra cash!

7. Amazon Mechanical Turk

Have you ever wanted to write a 650 word article about household products? No? Well now you can! Amazon Mechanical Turk is a website that pays you to do boringly simple tasks that computer can’t do. You can do all kinds of different things on this website, whether it be identifying brands on a banner for $0.60, copying text from a business card for $0.02 or recording your iPhone for a week for $20.00. There is plenty on this website to keep you busy. Check it out for yourself at mturk.com.

6.  Professional Gaming Tutor

We all hate it when we’re playing COD online and a n00b ends up on in our team. The type of person who would try and defuse a bomb with only 5 seconds left. But did you know that some gaming novices are actually willing to play real money to be taught how to play?! An 8 year old kid from America managed to scrap together $25 dollars an hour teaching adult men how to play Halo 2.

5. Do Something you’re good at for $5

Fiverr is a website where you can post something you’re good at doing and then someone will pay you $5 dollars to do it. Whether it be, removing the background on an image, designing a Facebook cover photo, or writing a custom message on your boobs. This website is great for both people who are strapped for cash and companies that are looking for unusual ways to market themselves.

Website: fiverr.com

4. Put Adverts on your Car

We all know that running a car is expensive, especially for us students where the price of insurance matches that of a six-bed-roomed house. So why not ease the costs by wrapping your vehicle in adverts? Lewis Hamilton does it, so why can’t you? Wrapping your car in adverts can bag you an extra £200 a month! You can also choose if there are any companies you do not wish to promote, so don’t worry guys, no one is forcing you to drive around with a giant tampon on your car.

3. Become a TV Extra

Do you like walking down corridors? You enjoy putting bags in lockers? Are you a fan of drinking a fake pint as 7am? Then why not become an extra?! There are tons of extras agency’s knocking about to sign up with, just do your research first because most of them charge you to join. But who knows, in a months’ time your mum might be sat at home watching Corrie and see you ordering a brew off Roy.

2. Sell your Life

Mark Merrill is an interesting fellow. One day he decided to sell his life for 100,000 shares, charging $1 each. Now his shareholders basically vote on any kinds of decisions he needs to make whether it be, should I become vegetarian? Should I die my hair? Or even something more serious like should I get a vasectomy? Then whichever response gets the most votes he does, whether he likes it or not.

1.  Youtube Partner

These days Youtube isn’t just for watching pandas sneeze and children biting their sibling’s fingers. 10,000s of people use Youtube as their main source of income. Take Freddiew, once a week he uploads an incredible short film which quite often in terms of vfx tops industry professionals. And through this passion for video production him and his small team earns a few thousand bucks a day. But I know what you’re thinking, I have no idea how to do amazing editing with green screens and 3D animation, I don’t own any fancy HD camcorders. Well I bet you own a video game? Pewdiepie has over 20 million subscribers on Youtube simply because he records himself playing video games with funny and entertaining commentary. This man became a millionaire without leaving his desk. Just try it, make a video, you never know, it might lead somewhere…

I didn't change very much within this second draft, I made it about 100 words shorter because I thought that would be more appropriate for my short attention spanned - target audience. I also tried to add very sarcastic humor wherever I could because that is the tone that a teenage audience would appeal to.

The rest of the week was spent sub-editing my first article, because I am ahead of my schedule perhaps this meant that I was a little relaxed and wasn't working as fast or efficiently as I could have done, and this will probably catch up to me in the future. This is my DPS so far:

Obviously I still have a lot to do, but I do like the use of the triangle because I think it makes the page looks very dynamic, I used the blue and white colour scheme just like I said I was going to in my treatment plan because it creates a modern and masculine feel.

I am not particularly experienced with InDesign and before this week I did not know how to create shapes, so that is one think which I have learned. The reason that I chose to do this article first is because I had already done the photoshoot for it a couple of weeks ago, however when looking through the pictures of them, some of them were over-exposed, so I had to do very minor colour correction in Photoshop.

I ran into a couple of issues this week; I had to remove the the background from all of the images that I wanted to use, which I did using the lasso tool in Photoshop, this took way longer than I thought it would which slowed down my progress considerably. I also had an issue when I went to work on my project outside of class, because I did not have admin rights to install the fonts I wanted on any of the Windows computers, meaning I could only use the Mac's, there are only 3 Apply computers compared to about 50 PC's meaning that most of the time they were all already being used by fellow Media students. This also slowed down my productivity.

I think that if my client were to see the progress I have made this week they would probably be slightly disappointed because they'd expect at least 1 DPS to be complete by now, I partly blame my lack of productivity on not being 100% confident or competent in InDesign but mostly the main issue is how easily distracted I get from my work. In order to overcome this I should perhaps consider isolating myself from other members of the class, so instead of talking and socializing, I am working. However this sometimes depresses me and demotivates me from working even further.

I think although I haven't done very much just yet the current state of my product does mirror what I said I would do in my treatment, the colour scheme is the same as what I originally said, and my model creates a window to the future self from the reader's point of view. The only thing that I have done differently is split the page diagonally into two colours, this is an Idea that I got from Stuff magazine which I believe, like I have already said, looks good.

I am a little worried about my progress so far, and whether or not I am going to be able to complete everything in time, however, providing I stay motivated and do plenty of work outside of lessons, I should be able to keep my head above the water.

I intend to use strong verbs and adjectives to spice up my text and keeps what I am saying interesting. Sentences will be quite complex so that I am able to get across all the information I want, I also don’t want my teenage audience to feel like they’re being talked to like they’re dumb children.
Tone of address

I will use quite a sarcastic tone because I think that is what my audience will relate to the most, and they will hopefully also find it quite humorous, which should keep them interested.

Although sentences will be reasonable complex my actual paragraphs will be quite short just to make sure my audience don’t lose interest, or are put off by the large chunks of text. This will cause my article to be written at a medium pace. This is a top 10 style article so I do not intend on writing a conclusion. The different paragraphs will be connected via a number.

Stylistics
(repetition, strong verbs, adjectives, alliteration, similes, metaphors, sentencing, rhythm)
I intend to use repetition in this article because I will basically rephrase what I said in the kicker, in the conclusion, this will give the article shape.
Tone of address

I will use a relatively serious tone within this article so that the reader knows that the intention is to actually give you proper advice.
Structure and pace

article genre
(purpose, type)
The purpose of this article is to basically create discussion and offer different opinions revolving around internet piracy. I intend to offer both sides of the argument from different opinions.
Narrative voice
(1st, 2nd or 3rd person)
This article will be written in 2nd person in order to be more direct to the reader. This will also establish a better and more personal connection with them.
Register
(informal/formal, colloquial, dialect, taboo words?)
My kicker will be written in a very chatty, colloquial and informal way to arrest the reader’s flickability. However the rest of the article will be very factual based and just quoting other people’s opinions as well as offering statistics.
Stylistics
(repetition, strong verbs, adjectives, alliteration, similes, metaphors, sentencing, rhythm)
I intend to use very short sentences in this article so that I am able to output a lot of information and statistics without making the article too long and boring. I will be very literal in this article rather than use metaphors, similes etc.
Tone of address
(hectoring, sarcastic, ‘matey’, ironic, etc)
Other than in the kicker, this article will have a very serious tone to get the message across that online piracy is a very serious thing.
Structure and pace
(discourse structure, logical paragraphing, connectives, conclusion)
This will not be one long continuous article, rather a collection of break out boxes that offer unlinked facts, statistics and opinions. The objective of this article is just to get the reader to think and conclude for themselves whether or not they think piracy is bad.
